North Carolina car accident leaves 5 injured

A severe accident on Hope Mills Road in Fayetteville has left five people injured, two of them seriously. The three-vehicle wreck happened around 5 p.m. on Feb. 6. According to the local fire chief, first responders arrived on the scene shortly after the accident occurred and helped remove passengers from two of the vehicles by cutting them free.

A red Mazda four-door sedan was involved in the accident, as well as a Ford Escape and a GMC sport utility vehicle. One of the three people in the GMC was seriously hurt, while the other two received only minor injuries. The male driver of the Mazda was also seriously injured, and received treatment from emergency personnel at the scene. The Ford driver's injuries were described as minor. According to an EMS worker, the two people who suffered serious injuries were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. No additional information was available concerning other injured passengers.

According to reports, it appeared that the GMC may have gone over the top of the Mazda. Investigators, though, were still trying to piece together how the accident happened that evening. The road was littered with debris, including an oil-soaked deck of cards, chipped CDs and shattered glass. Emergency crews closed the road for more than two hours, and diverted traffic onto George Owen Drive.

Police were documenting the scene and measuring tire marks. While the police chief did not want to speculate on the offense or offender, he said it is likely charges will be filed. That statement would indicate that one of the drivers could have been negligent in the operation of a motor vehicle, causing the crash. If this can be verified, the victims may be able to seek compensation for medical bills and other damages.
