North Carolina driver to face charges in child's death

Losing a loved one in a motor vehicle accident is never an easy thing to deal with; this is especially true if that loved one is a child.  For one family, their grief over their loss may be lessened this month after police announced they may be pressing charges against the man responsible for her death.

According to police, the fatal car accident occured when a 31-year-old North Carolina man rear ended another vehicle that had been stopped at a traffic light.  The occupants of the vehicle, an 18-year-old woman and her two passengers, a 19-year-old woman and her 16-month-old daughter, were all seriously injured in the accident.  The toddler was the only one to have died as a result of their injuries.

Originally, police were only going to charge the man for driving under the influence and assault with a motor vehicle, but the wrongful death of the child has prompted investigators to add further charges.  Although they have not released the nature of the specific charges to the media it's likely that they could include vehicular homicide.

While these new charges will not bring back the loss of life that occured as a result of negligent driving, they may at least offer some form of closure to the family.  There is also the possibility now that the family could persue civil action against the 31-year-old man in the future.  It's not uncommon for accident victims to seek compensation in situations such as this.  Only time will tell now whether the surviving victims will do the same.
