North Carolina truck driver injured after other driver makes U-turn

On Behalf of | May 16, 2013 | Truck Accidents |

Most people in North Carolina expect that when an 18-wheeler is involved in an accident, the occupants in the other vehicle are more than likely the ones who receive a majority of the injuries. This is because of the fact that semi-trucks are much larger than the vehicles they usually come into contact with, providing a while lot of weight behind a collision.

But this wasn’t the case for a 41-year-old North Carolina truck driver this month who sustained serious injuries after a 57-year-old woman collided with his 18-wheeler after she attempted to make a U-turn on the freeway. According to some people, the female driver is lucky to not have received any injuries.

The 18-wheeler accident occurred just after 12 pm along I-95. The semi-truck driver was travelling northbound at the time when suddenly a 2005 Lexus made a U-turn, trying to go southbound in the northbound lanes. The two vehicles collided, causing the tractor-trailer to overturn into a wooded area. Emergency crews say that when they arrived on the scene they found the 57-year-old woman uninjured in her vehicle but needed to clear debris away from the truck’s cab in order to extract the severely injured man from the vehicle.

Suffering multiple compound fractures, the 41-year-old truck driver was transported to the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, South Carolina where he is recovering from what doctors say are non life-threatening injuries.

Law enforcement officers say that alcohol was a factor in the crash and the 57-year-old woman was placed in police custody and taken to a detention center for holding.  It’s unknown whether the truck driver will take any civil action in the case at this time.
