Brake issues lead to recall of some Honda Odyssey minivans

Some North Carolina motorists who drive Honda Odyssey minivans may be affected by a vehicle recall that will begin in March 2014. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a problem with the Vehicle Safety Assist System, or VSA, in 344,187 Odyssey minivans manufactured from August 8, 2006, through September 8, 2008, may cause these vehicles to brake hard without warning. Honda says that it will notify owners about the pending recall by letter, which will contain instructions explaining how to proceed.

Due to a lack of parts, Honda will not begin the recall until March. After receiving nearly two dozen complaints, the NHTSA began investigating the minivans on June 25, 2013. Honda had received 205 field reports and 109 warranty claims relating to the brake issues by June 30, 2013, according to the NHTSA. Further complaints lodged with the NHTSA claim that when the vehicles were taken for repairs, some dealers found trouble codes showing an issue with the steering-angle sensor, and other dealers were completely unable to identify the problem.

Honda says that the braking issue has not yet caused any accidents or injuries. When the parts become available, the company will send a second notification to affected owners encouraging them to take their vehicles to a Honda dealership for installation of updated yaw sensors to correct the problem.

Owners of 2007-’08 Odyssey minivans may question whether product manufacturers can be held liable for injuries or losses that result from serious car accidents after a recall has been announced. An attorney may be able to inform Fayetteville residents of specific legal remedies that may apply to their particular situation in addition to any applicable recall remedies.
