An Oct. 1 auto accident near Skinner’s Bypass in Lenoir County killed an octogenarian couple and hospitalized two other people, according the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The accident happened when the couple’s vehicle, a Honda, was attempting to pull out of the parking lot of a business located next to the highway and collided with a black Dodge pickup truck.

Both the 80-year-old driver of the Honda and her 83-year-old husband died at the scene of the accident, officials pronounced. An 84-year-old passenger in the vehicle suffered injuries in the crash and was transported by air to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where officials listed her in stable condition.

The male driver of the pickup truck was reportedly conscious and responsive to troopers following the wreck. He was transported to Lenoir Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. According to authorities, no charges were filed in connection with the accident immediately following the event.

Families of victims in a fatal car accident may suffer crippling financial losses besides emotional anguish and grief. For this reason, many bereaved families seek the counsel and representation of a personal injury lawyer in the wake of an accident. Civil remedies might be available to certain family members of deceased accident victims in the event that there is significant proof that the crash could have been avoided but for the actionable behavior of another party, such as excessive speeding or impaired driving.

Bereaved family members who press forward with a wrongful death claim in civil court and prevail may be awarded restitution for the pecuniary losses they suffered as a result of their loved one’s sudden and wrongful death. These losses may include funeral expenses and lost earnings.
