5-car crash kills 2 people in North Carolina

A five-car accident in North Carolina has killed a 44-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman. The crash occurred on Nov. 29 when the 44-year-old man's SUV veered into oncoming traffic and struck four other vehicles. Police have indicated that speed was a factor in the crash that also injured two other drivers.

An investigation is underway into the precise cause of the accident. Highway Patrol has taken aerial photographs of the scene in connection with the official investigation. Eyewitness accounts are also possible, as several people called 911 just before the crash to report that the 44-year-old man's SUV was traveling west in an eastbound lane.

In a fatal car accident like this one, the family of the 73-year-old victim may be considering a wrongful death claim against the driver who caused the accident. Because he also died in the crash, that claim would proceed against his estate. If successful in a civil suit, the woman's family may be able to recover significant compensation for expenses like funeral costs, pain and suffering, and loss of a loved one.

Wrongful death actions, however, hinge on the plaintiffs' ability to prove that the driver who caused the accident was acting negligently. The plaintiffs would also need to show that the driver's negligent conduct caused the victim's death. Those finding themselves in a similar situation may benefit by contacting a local attorney to potentially assist with their case. In some instance, punitive damages may be pursued in a claim as well.
