North Carolina hit-and-run devastates community

On Behalf of | Nov 7, 2015 | Car Accidents |

Parents typically teach their older children to look after their younger siblings. It appears one boy took such teaching to heart when he recently performed a heroic deed at a school bus stop to save his little sister from harm’s way. What happened next has left the North Carolina community reeling with grief. What began as a usual morning at a school bus stop turned into a tragic hit-and-run accident that resulted in the loss of one brave life.

The 11-year-old boy’s school bus stop is located across the street from his own home. He and several others, including his younger sister, were standing and waiting for their bus to arrive when a car suddenly veered off the road, heading straight for the children. The boy immediately shoved his sister away from the car’s path.

Sadly, the car — operated by a 57-year-old woman — struck the boy. He was transported to a nearby medical center but was unable to survive his injuries. Witnesses say that the driver fled the scene, never slowing down or attempting to stop after hitting the child.

The woman now faces a prison term of 25 years for felony hit-and-run resulting in death. This is not the first fatal motor vehicle accident in North Carolina and will not be the last. Parents and legal guardians of minor aged children may choose to file wrongful death claims in court after suffering the untimely deaths of children because of driver negligence. Being able to request that the court hold a negligent driver accountable for his or her actions might add a certain measure of solace to a tragic loss.
