Tragedy recently struck the East Carolina University campus community when a 20-year-old student died after succumbing to the injuries he suffered in an accident that occurred on Sunday, May 15.

The two-vehicle accident happened in Greenville at approximately 2 p.m. on Charles Boulevard near its intersection with Oakmont Drive. The student who was fatally injured was a resident of Lexington and a passenger in his girlfriend’s 2003 Nissan Altima. The woman was headed northbound, but for undetermined reasons, crossed into oncoming traffic.

The Altima was hit by a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado. There were two occupants in the truck, a married couple from Greenville age 67 and 63. Both were treated and later released from the hospital.

The Altima driver, 20, who is from Fayetteville and also a student at ECU, was taken to Vidant Medical Center where she was reportedly in fair condition.

Her boyfriend and passenger died the following day. As of the time of the media reports, the young woman had not been charged in the accident.

Any time a promising young life is snuffed out, friends and family members struggle to cope with feelings of regret and grief. In this case, it is especially poignant because the at-fault driver was in a relationship with the man who died in the accident.

Whenever someone is a guest passenger in a vehicle driven by an at-fault driver who gets into a wreck, the passenger has a clear path to filing a claim for damages to recover expenses and seek financial compensation. When a death occurs, surviving family members can file a claim for wrongful death if they choose.
