Car accidents increase over summer months

Summer time is one of the busiest vacation times of the year. And, for many, a summer vacation means a road trip.

In North Carolina, it is not uncommon for people to end up on I-95. However, according to the Daily Beast, I-95 is one of the most dangerous highways in America, with the more than 180 miles that run through North Carolina ranked the 44th deadliest. In fact, from 2004 to 2008, more 175 people were killed in car crashes in North Carolina on I-95.

Pay attention

Does this mean you should skip your summer road trip? Of course not. But it does mean you should be especially careful on the roads this summer, especially if you are traveling on a high risk highway.

One of the most important actions you can take is to pay attention to your own driving skills. For many of us, driving seems like second nature. It is easy to forget just how dangerous it can be. Make sure you are focused on the road and those around you.

Also keep an eye out for other drivers who may not be driving safely. For example, weaving on the road may indicate that a driver is intoxicated or is not focused on the task at hand. They may be tired, using their cell phone, or plagued by other distractions. If you find yourself sharing the road with these people, avoid them as much as possible.

Be prepared

When behind the wheel, you should always be prepared for a potential emergency. This means keeping both hands near the middle of the wheel, and attempting to drive in the right or middle lanes when possible. The left lane may go faster, but it also means a greater chance of an accident. You also need to watch the other vehicles around you and make necessary adjustments.

The condition of your car matters

Keeping your car in good shape will make it easier to drive and control. You should also watch out for vehicles that seem run down, since many people who don’t put in the time and effort to keep their vehicle in good shape may not have put in the effort to be good drivers. This coupled with the fact that a broken down car can easily invite an accident makes it a good idea to stay on top of maintenance.

Resist night driving

Don’t drive at night if you don’t have to. There may be less traffic, but there is also less visibility and those who are on the road are more likely to be impaired or tired.

Even if you follow all of these tips, there are no guarantees you will not be in an accident, especially with the high level of accidents on I-95. If you or a loved one is involved in a serious accident, it is important to get prompt medical and legal attention to address your injuries and losses. In addition to seeking care from medical professional, a qualified personal injury/wrongful death attorney can also review your rights and help you decide the appropriate compensation to pursue for your circumstances.
