Driver arrested for DWI in Raleigh multi-vehicle accident

On Behalf of | Jan 8, 2013 | Motorcycle Accidents |

A man was arrested for drunk driving after hitting a motorcycle and causing a third vehicle to crash into the accident scene. The accident happened early Sunday morning just after 1 a.m. at the Edenton Street and West Street intersection, according to the Raleigh police. The driver of the vehicle that crashed into the motorcycle has been charged with DWI. The driver of the third vehicle involved and the motorcyclist were both taken to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Police have not yet released the names or conditions of those injured in the crash, but they did indicate the two injured victims were treated for non-life threatening injuries, which is fortunate. All too often motorcycle accidents result in serious injuries or death since the drivers are not afforded the same protections as automobile drivers and passengers are. Motorcycle accident injuries often include broken bones and fractures, head injuries even traumatic brain injuries can result if a motorcyclist hits his head too hard.

However, as is common with many accidents involving a sudden impact, more serious injuries can develop later on. For this reason it is important to be treated immediately following a crash so a doctor can assess the situation and inform injured victims of what symptoms to look out for as their injuries progress and heal. Head injuries can progress long after the initial crash and include memory loss, internal bleeding or nerve damage and other symptoms that may involve severe head trauma.

When a driver is arrested for drinking and driving or reckless endangerment, these charges can go a long way in proving driver negligence was the cause of the accident. In this case the motorcyclist and other driver may appear to have suffered non-life threatening injuries; however there are any number of injuries that can result in both short and long-term medical expenses, lost work and even permanent disability. A successful personal injury claim against the seemingly negligent driver could result in compensation for not only the victims’ financial losses but pain and suffering as well.
