North Carolina troopers respond to a fatal 4-car accident

On Behalf of | Mar 10, 2014 | Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents |

A chain-reaction crash occurred as drivers, attempting to avoid an accident, slammed on their brakes. Most of the vehicles involved either went out of control or rammed into other cars. A transport van belonging to the Twin County Disabled American Veterans Chapter in Rocky Mount was found upside down in a ditch, according to reports. A male passenger in the van died, and the 63-year-old female driver was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville due to her injuries. No other drivers were hurt in this incident.

The fatal car accident occurred around 11 a.m. on March 5. The North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the scene, which was near Falkland in Pitt County. Troopers report the four-car accident occurred on Highway 43 when a black Honda or Nissan apparently attempted to pass another vehicle illegally on the two-lane road. That vehicle never stopped, and police say that if the driver is found, she may face charges related to the man’s death.

Troopers indicate the car crash was a result of poor judgment, speed and vehicles following too closely on a dangerous stretch of roadway. The 30-year-old driver of an SUV that struck the van is facing misdemeanor charges of death by motor vehicle.

When an accident like this occurs, the family of the deceased victim may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver who is found to be at fault. Through that action, the family may be able to collect compensation that that covers the damages that stem from the accident. A similar action may be pursued by individuals who survived the crash. A personal injury lawsuit may result in awards that cover the cost of medical care and wages lost while in recovery.
