Inadequate security at festivals, concerts and fairs

On Behalf of | Jul 31, 2019 | Premises Liability |

One of the perks of summer is the number of local festivals, concerts and fairs around. When you attend one of these events, you have a right to expect that the organizers will have taken certain steps to ensure the general safety of everyone present.

What are some of the top security issues that you should expect the event’s organizers to properly manage?

1. The entrance and exits

Controlling who gets into an event is important for a number of different reasons, not the least of which is making sure that nobody is bringing anything (like a weapon) into the area that could pose an unreasonable danger to others. It’s also a good way to screen out people who are obviously intoxicated before they even get to an event — especially if more alcohol is available on the premises.

However, security forces also need to be available to help attendees find exits — and those exits need to be clearly marked. In an emergency, the average attendee may assume the only way out is the same way they came in — and that can lead to trample deaths and other tragedies.

2. Communication of problems

Most festivals and summer events are large affairs — which means that the security team has to be able to communicate effectively at a distance from each other. If there’s some sort of problem at one end of a Renaissance Fair (like a fight breaking out), a lone security officer won’t be able to handle the situation and protect other attendees without help.

A security team should have a plan in place — and the available means — to quickly and effectively communicate the need for assistance to each other to provide an adequate response to any problems.

3. Coordination and preparation

Safety procedures and responses to problems should be practiced in advance. If the first time a security team experiences a problem is the first time they put their response plan in action, that’s a recipe for a disaster.

If you were injured at an event at which inadequate security played a part, you may have a right to compensation for your injuries. Find out more about your options today.
