These 3 steps are the most important after any car accident

Getting into a car crash is a stressful and life-changing experience. Many different news outlets will provide list after list of things to do after an accident, but these lists can be overwhelming. It can help to know the most important steps to take after a car accident so you can navigate this emotional and painful time, not have a 20-point list to go through. That can be helpful later in the process, but the three most helpful tips to know as a proactive step before a crash or shortly after a crash include the following.

#1: Seek medical attention

If the accident was serious and you, a passenger, or anyone else involved in the crash experiences injuries, get medical attention. Get treatment and make sure to address health needs first. Even injuries that may seem relatively minor, like a sore abdomen or confusion after hiting their head on the windshield or other portion of the car, can be a symptom of a much more serious problem.

#2: Gather information

Get the names of others involved in the accident, including the other driver’s contact information, insurance information, driver’s license, and license plate number. If possible, take a few photos of the scene and damage to the vehicles.

#3: Consider legal remedies.

If the accident was the result of another driver’s reckless or negligent driving that driver is likely liable for the costs resulting from the crash. This can include medical and rehabilitative costs, repair or replacement expenses for your vehicle, and lost wages if you were unable to return to work immediately following the accident.

After considering the first three steps and taking a moment to breathe, you may be ready to move forward with the particulars. Legal counsel can help guide you through the next steps, making an overwhelming process much more manageable.
