When to watch out for reckless driving during the summer

On Behalf of | May 11, 2023 | Car Accidents |

Drivers in North Carolina are advised to look out for several serious driving hazards this summer. This season comes with increased risk to drivers and pedestrians alike. Knowing the most common causes of accidents will help drivers know what to look out for. These can be summed up as follows:

Roadside construction

One of the most prevalent causes of motor vehicle accidents is ongoing construction on roads. This can occur on highways, freeways, and residential roads. This can result in unforeseen delays, obstructions, and an increased risk of accidents.

Drivers who encounter roadside construction are advised to take the following steps:

  • Avoid them altogether if you know where they are likely to be.
  • Find a completely different route to take
  • Adjust the time at which you leave for work or any other activity
  • Follow all of the posted notices to stay completely safe.
  • Keep your speed slow and increase the distance at which you follow vehicles that may be ahead of you.

Motorcycles

Increased potential for motorcycle accidents during the summer is another factor to consider. Motorcycles are sometimes hard to coexist with on the roads. This is because some riders may tend to adopt unsafe practices such as lane splitting. Motorcycles can also sometimes disappear into your blind spot.

Pedestrians

You may expect to encounter any number of pedestrians on the road during the summer season. While many of them will be observing safety practices, you need to be on the lookout for those who may be distracted. Make sure to come to a full stop at all crosswalk areas. Never pass a vehicle that is stopped at a crossing section.

Bicycle riders

Bicyclists can be hard to spot, especially at night. People who ride bikes on the roads are advised to wear especially reflective clothing. Drivers should give plenty of space to people on bicycles. Watch out for them when you open your door or make turns at an intersection.
